How to turn regular photos into Portrait mode photos on an iPhone

I’m loving the new camera features on my iPhone 15! The Auto Portrait Capture is a total game-changer, especially when I forget to switch modes beforehand. If you’re somewhat like me, then this guide is for you. In this article, I’ll tell you how to turn regular photos into Portrait mode photos on an iPhone 15 and get those gorgeous blurred backgrounds with artistic effects.

While transforming your favorite iPhone 15 photos into stunning portraits is simpler than you think, there’s a catch! You can only convert a photo shot on your iPhone 15 as a portrait photo if your photo features a person, a furry friend (dog or cat), and your device has captured some depth information. If all these criteria are met, then you’re ready to add that professional-looking touch.

How to convert normal photo to portrait mode on iPhone 15 series

Adhere to the simple steps described below to convert your normal photo to a portrait mode photo on your iPhone 15 series device:

1. Head to the Photos app on your device. Now locate the image you wish to convert to Portrait mode and tap on the image to open it.

2. At the top left corner of the screen, press the Portrait button.

Note: If you’re editing a live photo, tap the Live icon.

3. Select the Portrait option, and you’re good to go as your normal image will now be converted to a portrait image.

Open the photo, press the Live or Portrait button, and select Portrait from the available options

How to apply portrait effect to photos taken on iPhone 15

The fun doesn’t stop after you make it a portrait! After creating your portrait, play with background blur and lighting intensity to achieve your desired artistic effect. Here’s how you can achieve the perfect look:

1. Launch the Photos app on your device and open the image if you want to add a portrait effect.

2. Tap on the Edit button and press the Portrait factor at the bottom of the screen.

3. Just give the slider a gentle swipe to adjust how blurry the background should look. Furthermore, this feature also helps create a sense of depth in your image.

Note: Tap the desired subject to switch focus between subjects in a photo. The yellow autofocus box will indicate the newly selected subject.

4. Once you’re satisfied, select Done.

Head to the photo, tap Edit button, press Portrait, adjust slider, and tap Done

Lastly, don’t forget to play around with filters, crop your image, or use the Adjust option to fine-tune the lighting and colors. Remember that the possibilities are endless!

How to disable auto portrait capture on iPhone 15

Though your iPhone 15 can automatically sense when there’s a person, dog, or cat in your photo to make them look better, those extra details come with a price. These details take up extra space on your device. If you’re running low on storage and would rather have those extra gigabytes, here’s how you can easily turn this feature off in your Camera settings:

1. Go to the Settings on your iPhone.

2. Scroll down and choose Camera from the available options.

3. Toggle off the button next to Portraits in Photo Mode.

Go to Settings, choose Camera, and toggle off Portraits in Photo Mode button

Remember that if you want to take a portrait photo, once you disable the auto portrait feature, simply open the Camera app and select Portrait mode.
