Apple’s new AirPods Pro to ditch Lightning for USB-C, but no other changes expected⏱️ 1 min read

New AirPods Pro

Apple has some interesting updates in the pipeline for its AirPods Pro, and it’s not just about the earbuds themselves. On Tuesday, September 12, Apple will unveil some exciting news at its ‘Wonderlust’ event. One of these tidbits is the introduction of a USB-C charging case for the AirPods Pro. This move is expected to be unveiled during the event, and folks are buzzing with anticipation.

This change is primarily about the charging case, so don’t get your hopes up too high. As far as the actual earbuds are concerned, it seems they will remain unchanged for now. Mark Gurman, an Apple-related news expert, published this insight in his recent Power On newsletter. So, don’t expect a whole upgraded AirPods Pro experience, but the way you charge them is getting a makeover.

Interestingly, Gurman speculates that this move to USB-C charging might not stop with the AirPods Pro. All AirPods could get a charging upgrade from Apple in the future. However, for now, it looks like the device will be leading the charge, pun intended.

You might be wondering about the other rumored features of the AirPods Pro. Well, while there’s no hardware overhaul expected just yet, there are some software-based enhancements on the horizon. These are likely to arrive with the release of iOS 17. So, even though you won’t be getting new physical buttons or a different design, there will still be some improvements to look forward to.

But that’s not all; Gurman also hints at some hearing aid capabilities that could make their way to the AirPods Pro over the next year or so. Apple has been making strides in accessibility features, and this would be a welcome addition for those who rely on hearing aids.

Lastly, Gurman hints at potential price reductions for the entry-level AirPods as USB-C becomes standard across the entire AirPods range. This USB-C update for the AirPods Pro could ripple through and impact the costs of other models.
